residing in Australia. The applicants may apply for "Contributory Parent" Visa (Temporary or Permanent) or the
normal scheme "Parent" Visa (Permanent).

The main criteria for both parent category visas are the same. However,
applicants for the Contributory Parent visa are required to make a significant
financial contribution to their future health and welfare costs. The Contributory
Parent visa category also offers temporary visas valid for 2 years.

Holders of a temporary Contributory Parent visas will be able to apply for a permanent Contributory Parent visa.

Parent visas are capped, meaning only a certain number of visas will be granted in each financial year. In the
2011–12 Migration Program year:

* 2000 places will be allocated to the (non-contributory) Parent category, including approximately 1400 places
for Parent (subclass 103) visas and approximately 600 places for Aged Parent (subclass 804) visas.
* 6500 places have been allocated to the Contributory Parent category (subclasses 173/143 and subclasses
884/864).

Based on current planning levels, parent category visa applicants can expect an approximate 15 years wait,  and
new contributory parent category visa applicants can expect to wait up to 12 months before visa grant
consideration after being allocated a queue date.
