Earlier this week the Australian and Iranian Foreign Minister’s met in Canberra to discuss bilateral relations – including the Australian Government’s wish to send failed asylum seeker applicants back to Iran.
The Iranian Foreign Minister Dr Mohammad Javad Zarif told reporters after the meeting that Iran would welcome back “with pride” his returned countrymen but only if they returned to Iran voluntarily.
Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister Tanya Plibersek has voiced concerns about returning people to Iran given the countries “pretty poor human rights record” particularly for repeatedly cracking down on journalists freedoms and executing people for being gay. Ms Plibersek has called on the government to assure that any returned asylum seeker will be safe once back in Iran.
